Abbey Wood gets its name from the nearby Lesnes Abbey Woods, which once belonged to the monks of Lesnes Abbey. Now the green open spaces and woods are home to a variety of birds and wildlife. The park is very popular with local residents and families for walks and the children’s playground.
Abbey Wood is 13 miles south-east of central London with Woolwich to the west, Thamesmead to the north and Belvedere to the east.
The area around the station is currently under regeneration with the arrival of Crossrail (due to open late 2018). The Cross Quarter development next to the new station is a mixed used development with the first phase including the opening of a large Sainsbury Superstore and a modern residential development Hippersley Point on Tilston Bright Square.
The redevelopment of the area will continue to bring more homes and local amenities for the local residents as demand for properties in the area continue to rise with the opening of Crossrail’s Elizabeth Line.
Other sought after parts of Abbey Wood are; the Co-op Estate (former site of Co-operative farm and Upper Abbey Wood with a mix of Victorian terraced houses, thirties semis and modern houses and popular with families as there are many good schools in the area such as Bedonwell Infant and Junior School.
